We are New Zealand's newest university, yet we have been educating people in the Auckland region for over a century. AUT first came into being in 1895 as the Auckland Technical School, opening its doors with a roll of 30 students. At that time we were a school for the trades, teaching subjects such as mechanical and architectural drawing, cookery and dressmaking

The Education Act requires all tertiary education institutions to have a Charter. CPIT's first Charter was approved in 1991 and was revised in 1998. The Education Act was amended in 2002 and all tertiary education institutions were required to draft new Charters. CPIT's new Charter has been approved by the Associate Minister of Education, the Hon Steve Maharey, for the period 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2008. The Charter includes CPIT's Vision, Mission, Values, and Strategic Goals.

Lincoln University takes its name from its location. The University is situated at Lincoln, a small rural township (resident population approx. 2100) located about 20 kilometres south-west of Christchurch in Canterbury’s Selwyn District.

Lincoln’s population swells daily to over 6000 when nearby Lincoln University and Lincoln High School are in term and staff commute from the city and elsewhere to work at the local Crown Research Institutes and the wool research organisation Canesis.
