Patna University

Patna University is the 7th oldest University of the Indian subcontinent, which was established in the year 1917 to cater to the growing needs of higher education of Bihar, Orissa and Nepal. The history of this University is closely linked with the history of modern Bihar – the saga of her educational, cultural, political and economic growth. National Museum Institute (NMI)

For a long time, the academicians and policy planners felt the need to initiate advanced studies in the areas of History of Art, Conservation, and Museology, keeping in mind the enormous cultural property of the Nation. A small but decisive step in this direction was taken by starting diploma and postgraduate diploma courses in History of Art and their sources and Restoration of Oil Paintings in National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. The programme was later shifted to National Museum in 1985 and its scope was expanded to include teaching in History of Art, covering both Ancient and Modern; and Eastern and Western. Similarly, the programme of Restoration of Oil Paintings was also widened by including the restoration of other works of art of organic and inorganic material. With a view to enable the students to benefit and make a career out of these advanced studies, as also to facilitate research and furtherance of knowledge in the above mentioned fields, it was considered appropriate to set up an institute that could award its own M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Thus the Society of the National Museum Institute of History of Art, Conservation & Museology, New Delhi was formed and registered on January 27, 1989 under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. Based on the recommendations of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India accorded the status of “Deemed to be University” on April 28, 1989 to the National Museum Institute of History of Art, Conservation and Museology, to be administered by the above Society
